E-Commerce & AI: Inside Klarna & Google Cloud's Partnership

Klarna, the global digital bank and flexible payments provider, has announced a strategic partnership with Google Cloud.
This collaboration is set to leverage AI to personalise the shopping experience for Klarna's 114 million consumers.
The move comes at a time when the fintech sector has seen a significant increase AI adoption, with the aim of improving services and efficiency.
The partnership will see Klarna utilise Google Cloud's full AI stack from infrastructure to models.
This will accelerate the development of consumer-centric products and creative campaigns.
A new era of personalised shopping
David Sandström, Klarna's Chief Marketing Officer, has helped to shape the firm's AI strategy.
"At Klarna we're not just adopting AI to streamline operations – we're using it to rethink creativity itself" he says.
"By combining Google Cloud's leading AI models with Klarna's unique consumer insights we can craft experiences that feel smarter and more personal," he adds.
"Early pilots already show the potential: AI-driven creative concepts from dynamic digital lookbooks to hyper-personalised product campaigns boosted time spent in our app by 15% and increased orders by 50%.
"For us this is proof that when creativity meets AI the results can transform the way people shop".
The collaboration will initially focus on two key areas to enrich the consumer's journey within the Klarna app.
Klarna will use Google's generative media models including Veo 2 and Gemini 2.5 Flash Image to create dynamic digital "lookbooks".
These models will also be used to generate hyper-personalised marketing campaigns.
Furthermore, the partnership will use AI to enhance Klarna’s image library of over 200 million images, refining visuals for a more engaging user experience.
The competitive landscape
This partnership is indicative of a broader trend in the fintech industry where AI is becoming a important tool for growth and innovation.
Other major players like Revolut have also expanded partnerships with Google Cloud to leverage AI for global expansion and enhanced fraud detection.
Klarna's move to integrate AI so deeply into its platform also aligns with its recent strategic shifts.
The company has been making a concerted push into leveraging AI as a core component of its strategy, centring on using AI to improve customer experience.
This partnership with Google Cloud can be seen as a key step in strengthening its technological capabilities and market position after its public listing.
Security at the core
The collaboration extends beyond just the customer-facing experience. Klarna will also use Google Cloud's AI hardware and expertise to combat fraud and money laundering.
This will be achieved through the training and deployment of graph neural networks.
These advanced machine learning models are designed to analyse complex connections between users transactions and devices to detect suspicious patterns with greater accuracy.
"To lead in this new AI era businesses require more than tools – they need strategic capabilities. Our partnership with Klarna is about providing just that" says Marianne Janik, Vice-President EMEA North at Google Cloud.
"Our integrated AI-optimised platform and cutting-edge models are enabling Klarna to unlock significant creative velocity and drive innovation.
"We're proud to help Klarna not just adopt AI but also use it to fundamentally redefine the customer experience."
The partnership between Klarna and Google Cloud signals a significant step forward in the integration of AI in the fintech and e-commerce sectors.
By focusing on both creative innovation and robust security measures the collaboration aims to set a new standard for personalised and secure online shopping.
As AI technology continues to evolve, partnerships such as this one continue to shape the future of the digital marketplace.
