Deutsche Bank Enhances Operations with Google Cloud AI

Deutsche Bank's strategic decision to migrate 260 applications to Google Cloud has set the stage for incorporating generative AI (Gen AI) technology across various facets of its business. This is according to the bank's top technology executive.
Bernd Leukert, who holds the titles of Chief Technology, Data, and Innovation Officer at Deutsche Bank, highlights the substantial benefits of their partnership with Google Cloud initiated back in 2019. Notably, the collaboration has seen data processing times slashed by up to half.
"This was a bold move at the time, and we needed a partner that could support this new direction. Google Cloud's leadership in data and AI made them the right choice for us," Bernd says.
Streamlining Banking Infrastructure
The advent of cloud computing has revolutionised how banks like Deutsche can implement AI systems, though the journey has been cautious due to regulatory and data security needs. Deutsche Bank tactically moved non-critical applications to the cloud first, gradually building experience before transitioning core systems.
From an internal infrastructure to Google Cloud, the bank has now shifted its SAP S4/HANA platform which includes 17 different financial reporting systems.
This transfer encompasses key operations like the general ledger and planning and forecasting functions, marking it as one of the finance industry's most intricate cloud migrations.
As a result, system recovery times have remarkably improved, accelerating by 16 to 20 times.
With cloud resources, the bank's strategic risk management system has become more responsive and adaptable, allowing it to effectively keep up with market dynamics and client demands.
"The cloud allows us to adapt and scale our technology easily, so we can respond to market fluctuations and customer needs with unprecedented speed," Bernd elaborates.
Advancing with AI and Cloud Integration
- 260 applications migrated to Google Cloud infrastructure
- 6,000 employees trained in cloud and AI skills through Cloud Engineer Programme
- 97% accuracy achieved in AI document processing with 40% reduction in handling time
Following its migration to the cloud, Deutsche Bank has tapped into advanced AI tools offered by Google Cloud's Vertex AI platform and innovative language models like Gemini. These tools are now integral in automating tasks such as document processing, achieving 97% accuracy and reducing times by 40%.
Moreover, the bank introduced a Digital Assistant developed on Google Cloud. This virtual aid enhances the efficiency of the bank's research, originations, advisory divisions, and supports staff in generating reports and analyzing business data.
"Our Google Cloud partnership gives us access to the Vertex AI platform and powerful large language models like Gemini," says Bernd. "We can securely experiment with new Gemini models before their public release."
Empowering Teams and Innovating Solutions
The cloud allows us to adapt and scale our technology easily, so we can respond to market fluctuations and customer needs with unprecedented speed
Deutsche Bank's tech teams are not only beneficiaries of AI in routine functions but are also engaging with Gen AI for tasks like coding and rectifying software bugs. Documentation processes in software development have also been enhanced, leveraging AI's capabilities.
About 6,000 bank employees have enhanced their expertise through a Cloud Engineer Programme—a collaboration with Google Cloud featuring hackathons and application migration sprints.
"We work side by side with Google Cloud to run hackathons and application migration sprints," Bernd notes. "We've removed bottlenecks from our processes so we can deploy new products more quickly."
The bank's Autobahn foreign exchange trading platform and the Frontier Finance platform for processing corporate customer invoices and payments exemplify the adaptive use of hybrid and full cloud infrastructures. Such flexibility addresses specific operational needs and accelerates product deployment.
"We also recognise that different applications have different needs," Bernd adds, pointing to the hybrid cloud solution for their Autobahn FX trading platform, optimally matching the unique demands of the business.
"The cloud allows us to adapt and scale our technology easily, so we can respond to market fluctuations and customer needs with unprecedented speed."
