Zurich Insurance: AI Leaders Signal Accelerated Digitisation

Zurich Insurance Group is intensifying its commitment to artificial intelligence through two strategic senior appointments from outside the traditional insurance industry.
The global insurer has recruited Terry Powell as Group Chief Technology Officer and Cristina Ghetti as Group Head of Digital Employee Experience.
Both executives will begin their roles on October 20, 2025, reporting directly to Ericson Chan, Group Chief Information & Digital Officer.
Bringing External AI Expertise
"I am thrilled to welcome Terry and Cristina to Zurich," says Ericson Chan. "Their extensive leadership experience with artificial intelligence in retail and fintech represents exactly the expertise we need to accelerate our digital transformation and drive deeper AI adoption.
"They bring a vital customer-centric perspective that will significantly enhance the experience for both our customers and employees."
Terry Powell's appointment represents a deliberate strategy to bring in expertise from customer-facing sectors.
He previously led IT transformation at ANZ Bank and pioneered AI-driven customer initiatives at Domino's Pizza. At Zurich, his focus will be on integrating AI into the group's core technology infrastructure to enhance resilience and operational efficiency.
Cristina Ghetti arrives with proven experience driving large-scale technology adoption at major consumer goods companies. During her time at Nestlé, she oversaw one of the industry's largest AI tool deployments.
Her mission at Zurich will be to build AI fluency throughout the workforce, ensuring employees can effectively harness the technology's capabilities.
AI Reshaping the Insurance Industry
Zurich's strategic shift reflects a broader industry transformation as insurers increasingly deploy AI to reimagine their operations. The technology is streamlining complex processes such as claims handling while strengthening fraud detection capabilities.
AI-driven analytics are also refining underwriting models, enabling more accurate risk pricing and spurring innovation in product development. Data-centric offerings like usage-based policies are becoming increasingly common as a result.
Real-World Applications Across the Value Chain
Recent industry developments demonstrate AI's application throughout the insurance value chain for managing both emerging and traditional risks.
Large language models now analyse vast datasets to assess underwriting risks more accurately and identify fraudulent activity with greater precision. This capability accelerates legitimate claim settlements and automates billing processes.
Insurers are also leveraging the technology to anticipate emerging threats, including risks associated with autonomous vehicles.
This involves preparing for new liability frameworks and evaluating novel challenges such as potential cyber-hacking of vehicle systems. This proactive approach highlights how AI has become essential for monitoring and adapting to a rapidly evolving risk landscape.
From Experimentation to Implementation
These appointments mark the latest chapter in Zurich Insurance's ongoing AI exploration. The company recently fostered internal innovation through its 'Agentic AI Hyper Challenge,' which generated over 200 prototypes addressing industry challenges.
Zurich has also maintained active engagement with the insurtech ecosystem through strategic investments and partnerships.
The hiring of Terry Powell and Cristina Ghetti signals a shift from experimentation to enterprise-wide implementation.
Their backgrounds in retail and consumer goods underscore Zurich's commitment to a user-centric approach in its AI transformation, bringing fresh perspectives from industries known for prioritising customer experience.
