Will AI Agents from HSBC and Visa Change how we Shop?

In a significant step for digital retail, HSBC UK has partnered with Visa to develop AI-powered shopping experiences, paving the way for customers to use their cards in agentic commerce.
A pilot this week saw a HSBC UK card used to initiate a live end-to-end agentic transaction on a merchant website, representing one of the first in the payments industry.
The successful trial signals a significant shift in digital retail. Rather than navigating multiple websites to compare products, book travel or buy household essentials, cardholders will soon be able to delegate these tasks to AI platforms.
From a business perspective, the tech aims to streamline the purchasing funnel. It reduces friction and cart abandonment for merchants while keeping customers in control with built-in permissions.
Andy Rankin, Chief Payments Officer at HSBC UK, says: “The way people pay is constantly evolving, and AI has the potential to make everyday shopping simpler, faster and more convenient for our customers. At HSBC UK, we’re helping to shape the future of payments by bringing together innovation, trusted technology and industry collaboration.”
Andy adds: “AI-powered commerce is set to be the next evolution in how people shop, and we’re working alongside our partners to help build the experiences that will make it a reality, while ensuring customers remain firmly in control of their money.
“As new technologies emerge, customers need confidence that their payments are protected and we’re working with Visa to lead the industry in building trusted experiences that can unlock the benefits of AI for consumers.”
High-tech convenience with guardrails
The integration of AI into payments is designed to save consumers time on everyday admin.
However, the rise of agentic commerce raises critical security questions for financial institutions. This involves AI agents making purchasing decisions and executing payments on behalf of humans.
To address this, the partnership is focusing heavily on the underlying security infrastructure, with transactions relying on robust authentication measures to protect consumers. These measures include customer biometrics to ensure that the AI cannot operate outside of strict, pre-approved boundaries.
Speaking to Finance Chief, Andy notes: "Just as online shopping and mobile payments transformed the way we buy, AI-powered commerce has the potential to become the next major evolution.
“As the technology matures, it could help unlock productivity across the economy by making purchasing faster and simpler for consumers while creating new opportunities for businesses to engage customers.
“We expect AI to become a natural part of many everyday shopping journeys, but widespread adoption will depend on building trusted experiences where customers remain in control of every payment decision.”
Scaling the security infrastructure
By embedding these capabilities into existing card networks, HSBC UK and Visa plan to scale the technology.
This strategy avoids requiring merchants to overhaul their payment systems. This approach relies on the security protocols already trusted by millions of businesses worldwide.
Rob Cameron, Group Country Manager, UK & Ireland at Visa, says: “AI agents are beginning to initiate transactions in real-world environments, and our role is to ensure every transaction remains secure, transparent and trusted.
“By connecting our issuer partners like HSBC UK, with merchants and AI systems through our network, we are enabling this next phase of commerce using the infrastructure and protections already in place.”
