Mollie and GoCardless' new deal will create a unified European payment platform which combines cards and bank payments for more than 350,000 businesses

Mollie has signed an agreement to acquire bank payment specialist GoCardless in a move that strengthens its position in the European fintech payments market.

The transaction brings together two fast-growing financial services providers to create a single platform serving more than 350,000 businesses across Europe and beyond.

The acquisition is designed to address a long-standing fintech challenge: fragmented payment infrastructure.

As businesses expand internationally or adopt subscription and recurring revenue models, managing multiple payment providers often increases costs, complexity and payment failure rates.

By integrating GoCardless into its platform, Mollie aims to offer a single payments partner that simplifies operations while supporting growth.

Building a unified payments platform

At the centre of the deal is the creation of an integrated solution that combines card payments, local payment methods and bank payments under one provider.

For fintech users, this reduces reliance on disconnected systems and improves visibility and control over payment flows.

The combined platform will serve a wide range of merchants. Large enterprises can consolidate their European payment stacks, reducing operational overheads.

SMEs, meanwhile, gain access to enterprise-grade capabilities without the complexity typically associated with them.

A key benefit of adding GoCardless to Mollie is the ability to offer bank payments alongside cards as standard.

This is particularly valuable for businesses built on recurring revenue, where card-only strategies often lead to involuntary churn due to expired cards or failed transactions.

Bank payments typically offer lower failure rates and transaction costs, improving cash flow and customer retention.

Koen Köppen, CEO of Mollie, says: “Mollie's mission has always been to make money management effortless. We were founded on the vision to eliminate financial bureaucracy for every business. We see that bureaucracy creates challenges, especially for businesses with recurring revenue.

“A card-only approach has its limits, leading to high costs due to failed payments and customer churn. GoCardless built the definitive solution to optimise this process with its global bank payment network.

“By bringing them into Mollie, we take a huge step towards fulfilling our vision and creating one complete platform for sustainable growth.”

Strengthening SaaS and platform business models

The acquisition also enhances Mollie’s proposition for SaaS platforms and vertical software vendors.

Through Mollie Connect, platforms will be able to integrate GoCardless’s bank payment network directly into their products, enabling customers to accept both card and bank payments through a single embedded solution.

For fintech platforms, this simplifies product development and creates a more consistent end-user experience

It also positions Mollie as a growth enabler, supporting embedded finance and subscription-based business models rather than acting solely as a payment processor.

Hyperlocal expertise with global scale

Another benefit of the deal is the combination of hyperlocal payment capabilities with simplified international expansion.

Mollie already supports local onboarding and integrations with domestic business software, reporting formats and popular payment methods such as iDEAL in the Netherlands, Satispay in Italy and Twint in Switzerland.

By adding GoCardless’s global bank payment network, the platform offers fintech users a clearer path to entering new markets while maintaining local relevance.

This balance is increasingly important as fintechs navigate Europe’s diverse regulatory and payments landscape.

A boost for European fintech

Hiroki Takeuchi, Co-Founder and CEO of GoCardless, says: “We’re incredibly excited to join forces with Mollie.

“This deal brings together two highly complementary businesses that have built best-in-class products across Europe and beyond

“By combining our expertise in card, bank and hyperlocal payments into one provider, we can better serve our customers, accelerate growth and raise the bar for the industry.

“It’s a win for European fintech and we’re confident that the new company will be greater than the sum of its parts.”

The integration of GoCardless products into the Mollie platform will be carried out in a phased approach, with a focus on service continuity and local customer support.

The transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close in mid 2026.
