Verifone: Advancing Fintech at the Forecourt with AI

Verifone is embedding AI across its payments infrastructure, targeting petroleum and convenience retail as a high-volume, high-risk environment where transaction speed, security and data orchestration are critical.
At its core, Verifone’s strategy centres on transforming the forecourt into a fully connected payments environment.
Its Commander platform, which powers more than 45% of US fuel and convenience locations and processes more than 35 million transactions daily, is evolving into an AI-enabled commerce engine.
Rather than treating payments as a standalone function, Verifone is integrating AI across the full transaction lifecycle – from authorisation and fraud detection to reconciliation and reporting – enabling operators to move from reactive management to real-time orchestration.
“AI is reshaping payments, and our focus is helping merchants achieve a competitive advantage by making commerce more intelligent, secure, and seamless,” says Himanshu Patel, CEO of Verifone.
“Verifone is building the infrastructure that lets businesses offer AI-driven experiences without added complexity – and nowhere does that matter more than in petroleum and convenience, where every second at the forecourt counts.”
Reducing friction in payment operations
One of the clearest applications of AI is in reducing friction across day-to-day payment operations.
The Commander Help Center’s AI Search Assistant enables site operators to resolve issues tied to payments, POS configurations and transaction workflows in seconds, minimising downtime that can directly impact revenue.
Behind the scenes, Verifone is also applying AI to streamline support processes linked to payment systems.
Internal tools provide agents with real-time visibility into merchant environments, automatically generate structured case notes and recommend fixes based on historical transaction and system data.
This translates into faster issue resolution, improved payment uptime and a more consistent checkout experience.
AI-Driven fraud and risk management
Fraud prevention is a central fintech battleground in fuel retail, where low-value, high-frequency transactions create opportunities for rapid exploitation.
Verifone’s AI-powered fraud detection, set to launch through Commander Central, introduces real-time risk scoring at the point of transaction.
By analysing transaction behaviour against configurable parameters, the system enables low-risk payments to flow uninterrupted while flagging anomalies before they result in chargebacks or losses.
This approach aligns with broader fintech trends toward embedded risk intelligence within payment flows, rather than relying on post-transaction analysis.
In turn, this strengthens margin protection for consumers, ensuring faster, more secure transactions at the pump.
Open ecosystems and embedded finance
Verifone’s fintech strategy extends beyond proprietary tools through its open architecture, designed to support embedded finance and third-party innovation.
Built on a Model Context Protocol (MCP), the platform enables external AI solutions to integrate directly with payments and transaction data.
This creates a foundation for value-added services – from intelligent checkout to personalised offers – delivered within the payment journey itself.
A case in point is Deligo’s AI-powered self-checkout, which uses computer vision to identify products without scanning.
Integrated into Verifone’s ecosystem, the solution reduces checkout friction while maintaining tight alignment with payment processing flows.
“By working with Verifone’s Commander platform, we are able to create a faster and simpler experience for both consumers and operators,” says Istvan Haidekker, CEO & Co-Founder of Deligo.
“As convenience stores continue to evolve, Deligo’s solution with Verifone helps store operators meet consumer expectations by cutting checkout lines, increasing sales and driving efficiency.”
From transaction data to intelligence
As payment volumes grow, so too does the value of transaction data.
Verifone is utilising AI within Commander Central to turn this data into actionable insights through natural language querying.
Operators can interrogate transaction histories, payment performance or site-level trends using simple prompts, with AI surfacing insights drawn from governed datasets across the platform.
This shift reflects a broader evolution in fintech: payments platforms more than systems for transactions, acting as intelligence layers that inform business decisions in real time.
