Agentic Commerce: Mastercard & Fiserv's Growing Partnership

Fiserv is set to integrate with Mastercard’s Secure Card on File solution as part of an extended partnership.
Additionally, Fiserv will become one of the first major payment processors to utilise Mastercard’s Agent Pay Acceptance Framework at scale.
The framework provides the opportunity for a scalable framework to enable AI agent transactions.
The partnership aims to raise expectations around agentic commerce by facilitating secure, intelligent and interoperable agentic commerce. Furthermore, it serves as a chance for merchants to embrace AI-driven payments.
What are the benefits of the partnership?
The Mastercard-Fiserv partnership means transactions can be made on behalf of customers with tokenisation and governance, with security measures in place such as fraud prevention and strong authentication.
Merchants will have more ability to participate in the agentic commerce era as the partnership facilitates access to tools and insights that help maintain control of client relationships while unlocking new streams of revenue.
Sanjay Saraf, SVP and Global Chief Product Officer, Merchant Solutions at Fiserv says: "Fiserv and Mastercard are working together to establish the foundation for secure, intelligent and interoperable agentic commerce experiences.
“Together, we are enabling merchants of all sizes to confidently participate in this new era of commerce, leveraging trusted standards and programmable payments to unlock growth.”
Agentic commerce is becoming increasingly accessible, with global financial giants such as Stripe partnering with AI-led businesses such as OpenAI.
Chiro Aikat, Co-President, US at Mastercard, adds: “Agentic commerce is transforming payments by creating smarter, more intuitive experiences for both merchants and consumers.
"These technologies simplify transactions, reduce friction, and enable businesses to deliver faster, more personalised experiences.
“By working with Fiserv, we’re making it easier for merchants to embrace these innovations in ways that add trust, speed and confidence.”
The latest collaboration builds on an existing partnership announced in mid-2025 that facilitated the mainstream adoption of stablecoin using Fiserv’s token FIUSD.
How Mastercard levelled the playing field for merchants
Mastercard announced its agentic protocol in October 2025, bidding to marry security and transparency with agentic commerce.
A recent report from Capgemini highlights that nearly 10% of financial services firms are already using AI agents at scale.
In a blog post, Pablo Fourez, Chief Digital Officer at Mastercard, writes: “Without a standardised method to verify the identity of agents and consumer intent, merchants risk increased fraud, reputational damage and ultimately a poor experience for their genuine customers.”
The Mastercard Agent Pay Acceptance Framework introduces registration and verification of agents before they can carry out transactions on the Mastercard Network.
Pablo continues: “Mastercard’s Agent Pay Acceptance Framework helps them recognise trusted AI agents and accept secure, tokenised transactions with minimal effort”.
The introduction of agents also offers greater control to merchants over data received from Mastercard.
Alongside trusted agent recognition, data from Mastercard includes purchase intent data, providing visibility of the consumer’s intent, ranging from cart contents to transaction limits. Additionally, agentic tokens that safeguard payment transaction data offers the opportunity for merchants to programme transaction-level controls.
Personalised engagement is also enabled by Mastercard data, providing information about returning customers in agent-mediated environments.
By partnering with other major players, such as Cloudflare, Mastercard is building a unified and consistent approach to agentic commerce that supports security, scalability and the widespread adoption of agentic commerce protocols.
