Visa launches Intelligent Authorisation in Europe, partnering with Fiserv, Worldline and UNICRE to modernise payments via a single API connection

Visa has officially launched its Visa Intelligent Authorisation (VIA) capability across Europe, marking a significant shift in how the region’s financial institutions handle payment processing.

This new capability on the Visa Acceptance Platform enables acquirers to modernise their payment processing while strengthening operational resilience through a single API connection.

By removing the need for expensive, time‑consuming infrastructure rebuilds, the service is designed to bolster the systems that underpin the digital economy.

Visa is already partnering with an initial group of acquirers in Europe to unlock VIA’s capabilities, including Comercia Global Payments, Elavon, Fiserv, UNICRE and Worldline.

Modernising the core of digital payments

Digital payments rely on real-time authorisation: acquirers send requests to issuing banks via card networks, which then approve or decline the transaction within seconds.

However, legacy systems often struggle to cope with the increased volume and data complexity of today's market. This can lead to issues such as false declines, higher operating costs, and hampered innovation.

VIA tackles these hurdles by offering a contemporary authorisation solution. This single integration can process transactions across all major card networks. With an industry-leading 99.999% uptime and an average global approval rate of 96.3%, VIA sets the benchmark.

Acquirers can deploy it as their primary processor or use it to augment their existing capabilities.

Dan Parsons, Head of Acceptance Sales at Visa Europe notes: “Commerce is moving faster than ever – across channels, markets and payment types – but too many transactions are still flowing through acquiring stacks built for a very different pace.

“When systems can’t keep up, the result is higher decline rates, increased costs and missed sales for merchants. Visa Intelligent Authorisation will help change that. It gives acquirers a fast path to modern, resilient processing, helping them build for what’s happening now and what’s coming next.”

Data-driven routing and risk management

At the centre of the new offering is a machine learning engine that analyses transaction data in real-time to help optimise routing decisions based on network rules, industry programmes and regional regulations.

Beyond simple processing, the product is also able to provide near real-time visibility of authorisation outcomes. Additionally, it offers instant risk alerts and a centralised portal complete with an analytics dashboard to streamline oversight, settlement and regulatory compliance tools.

The evolution of digital payments requires “modern processing infrastructure to become a prerequisite for innovation”, Visa says.

The increasing adoption of digital wallets, stablecoins, and emerging forms of commerce, such as agentic commerce, is leading to a significant increase in both the volume and complexity of transactions that authorisation systems must process.

Paul Adams, SVP and Head of Merchant Product EMEA at Fiserv

Paul Adams, SVP, Head of Merchant Product EMEA at Fiserv says: “Visa Intelligent Authorisation gives acquirers a faster path to modern, resilient processing.

“For our merchants and bank partners, this kind of infrastructure matters — it reduces friction, improves approval performance and creates space for innovation. We are pleased to work with Visa on solutions that raise the standard for payments across Europe.”

Research from the fintech behemoth states that mobile payments now represent more than half (59%) of all e-commerce transactions in Europe, with that figure expected to rise to three quarters (75%) by 2030.

Markus Frei, Head of Acquiring, Worldline

The partnership with major acquirers suggests a strong industry appetite for solutions that reduce friction and improve approval performance.

Markus Frei, Head of Acquiring at Worldline explains: “Worldline is extending how merchants accept payments.

“Our partnership with Visa Intelligent Authorisation enables fast and smart payment approvals, helping accept new businesses, reduce fraud and reach new customer segments including e-commerce sellers, subscription services and digital marketplaces.”
