Popular luxury card holder American Express has launched its Amex Agentic Commerce Experiences Kit to ensure AI purchases are protected

American Express (Amex) has announced what it calls as a “first-of-its-kind” developer kit as it works towards its stake in the field of agentic commerce.

The Amex Agentic Commerce Experiences (ACE) Developer Kit allows trust and control to the forefront of Amex-issued cards and memberships.

It sets out to enable “intent-driven” interactions with end-to-end visibility throughout the commerce lifecycle, all from within the closed loop of the Amex network.

Luke Gebb, Executive Vice President and Head of Global Innovation at American Express says: “We are made for this moment.

“Our closed-loop network and Membership assets give us a competitive advantage as AI-powered commerce evolves, enabling us to extend the support and seamless experiences Card Members expect from American Express into the agentic era.”

The announcement builds on Amex’s position to back up customers for agentic purchases, offering protection through its Amex Agent Purchase Protection.

How will developers benefit from the kit?

The kit centres on five key services that developers will be able to access.

Key areas include Amex’s Agent Registration – still in development – which verifies AI Agents to allow only trusted agents authorisation for transactions on the Amex network.

Additionally, Amex’s Account Enablement will be able to offer personalised Membership experiences as cardholders can register their cards for agentic purchases.

In order to establish accurate intent, Amex also allows integration with Intent Intelligence, supporting disputes as well as authentication and authorisation.

The integrated services will be provided to developers with interoperability in mind.

Luke explains: “AI agents are beginning to reshape how people discover products and services, plan travel and dining and make purchases.

“As these capabilities evolve, Card Members and Merchants will expect the same level of trust and security that they always relied on from American Express.

“The ACE Developer Kit enables this in AI-powered commerce.”

Further integrated services include the enablement of agentic purchases for card members through Payment Credentials.

Lastly, developers will gain access to Cart Context, allowing the sharing of cart details after and before transactions for the overall validation, authorisation and dispute support.

In a double push for an agentic strategy, Amex also announced an “industry-first” commitment through its Agent Purchase Protection

Amex will protect customers for any purchase where the agent has sent Amex the authenticated purchase intent which occurs after a card member authorises an AI agent to make the purchase.

Luke continues: “As commerce becomes more agent-powered, trust becomes the defining factor.

“Our goal is to ensure that when an agent acts on a Card Member’s behalf, the identities of both the human and the agent are authenticated and intent is clear – so that every Amex-enabled transaction reflects the backing and seamless experience that define our brand.

“That’s why we’re introducing Amex Agent Purchase Protection, an industry-first commitment to protect Card Members from registered agent error, as we build the foundation for agentic commerce to scale with transparency, accountability and confidence.”

Where does Amex intend to head with agentic commerce?

Amex anticipates that the kit will deliver two main benefits.

For merchants, the kit utilises the company's closed-loop network to provide better visibility, which is expected to reduce disputes and chargebacks.

For card members, the kit will be integrated into the Amex app to allow for precise spend controls.

Furthermore, over time, the kit is designed to embed Amex's unique Membership benefits, rewards and offers directly within agent-powered interactions, thereby strengthening the value proposition American Express offers its customers.

Introducing the kit and embedding payment capabilities into what the company terms as “emerging AI ecosystems” serves as one of three priorities Amex has identified in its agentic commerce strategy

The second is a focus on ensuring Amex membership assets are discoverable and actionable across leading AI platforms, with plans to extend this to Amex Offers and American Express Travel.

The final priority goes back to the foundations, with a clear focal point centred on “building proprietary AI-powered experiences”, according to Amex, across its owned platforms – with aims of helping card members access relevant value in AI-driven journeys.
