The Swedish fintech behemoth Klarna integrates flexible payments into Google’s AI ecosystems to power the next generation of agentic commerce

Klarna is officially embedding its buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) infrastructure into the heart of Google’s AI-driven ecosystem.

The global digital bank has announced it will offer flexible payment options within the Google Gemini app and Google Search, including AI Mode, via Google Pay in the US.

The move marks a significant shift in how fintech interacts with Gen AI.

Rather than being a secondary step in a browser, checkout is being woven directly into the conversational interface.

Consumers interacting with Gemini can now complete a purchase without exiting the dialogue or relying solely on traditional credit cards.

Improving access to agentic shopping

When a user discovers a product through Gemini or Search, the Google Pay interface will now present a Klarna button

This provides immediate access to interest-free instalments or longer-term financing for more substantial purchases.

To maintain its focus on responsible lending, Klarna performs an affordability check for each transaction.

The objective is to turn AI agents from simple research tools into full-scale commerce hubs.

David Sykes, Chief Commercial Officer at Klarna notes: “As shopping moves into conversational and AI-driven environments, flexible payments become essential infrastructure for how people buy.

“Our partnership with Google brings Klarna directly into these moments of decision, giving consumers more control over how they pay.”

The partnership further cements Klarna at the moment of decision, the fintech is positioning itself as the primary financial partner for the burgeoning AI-native consumer.

A standard for agentic commerce

This technical integration is built within Google Pay using the Universal Commerce Protocol.

This protocol allows for seamless checkouts across various Google surfaces and follows previous collaborations between the two firms across Google Store, Google Play and Google Cloud.

For Google, the addition of flexible payments is about reducing the drop-off rate that often occurs when a user has to switch apps to find their wallet or navigate a complex credit card form.

Ashish Gupta, VP/GM of Merchant Shopping at Google, says: “As agentic commerce scales, how people pay needs to keep pace with how they shop.

“By making Klarna's flexible payment options available at checkout in the Gemini app and Search via Google Pay, we're giving shoppers more flexibility, so they can make more confident, considered purchases with less friction.”

By providing these options within the Gemini app allows for a more considered approach to spending, as shoppers can see their financing options in real-time while they are still researching the product.

The open standards approach

The partnership reflects a broader trend in fintech where open standards are being utilised to build interoperable commerce systems.

By using the Universal Commerce Protocol, Klarna and Google are effectively creating a blueprint for how other AI platforms and financial providers might interact in the future.

This integration focuses on how the world moves toward AI-first search, the payment experience doesn't revert to a legacy model.

Both companies have stated that these efforts represent a shared commitment to building open standards for the next generation of AI-powered commerce.
