The European Identity Race: Signicat Partners with WSO2
Signicat is strengthening its position in Europe as it partners with WSO2 to offer a unified identity solution, posing as a solution to complications made through connecting dozens of national electronic ID (eID) schemes.
It also aims to solve connective complexity as Member States of the European Union (EU) work towards delivering EU Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallets by 2026.
By utilising the WSO2 technology, the partnership aims to deliver businesses that need authentication for customers a unified solution.
WSO2 customers will be able to access 35 European eIDs made available through Signicatâs platform. Customers will also be able to access future-proofing for the arrival of the EUDI Wallet.
Through the partnership, efficiency is a prominent benefit as WSO2 customers can experience extra time saved on the development and maintenance of compliance requirements.
Signicat could see new opportunities as a result of the partnership, connecting global users across WSO2âs client base to the identity solutions provider.
Geethika Cooray, Vice President and General Manager of Identity and Access Management at WSO2, notes: âThe challenge for most development teams isn't building the core application; it's managing the complex integrations required to operate across different markets, especially in the identity space.â
European identity solutions
An increase in digital banking in addition to a rise in e-commerce has led to a growing demand for convenient and secure authentication methods.
James Brodhurst, Partnerships Manager at Signicat, comments: âAuthentication for pan-European businesses shouldn't mean building a new identity strategy for every country. That approach not only slows down growth but can create dangerous gaps in security.
âThe digital economy is built on trust. By adding our network of European IDs to WSO2's powerful platform, we are making that trust easy to create. We are giving businesses one simple, secure way to operate and grow across borders."
Recent research from Signicat suggests that 68% of European customers see complex processes as a challenge, and as a result have abandoned a financial application.
Signicatâs Battle to Onboard report also states that 92% of respondents are concerned about data privacy. Signicat and WSO2 are now loaded with a âpowerful toolâ as the integrated solution offers the opportunity for challenges such as regional compliance and security to be addressed.
What is the EUDI?
The European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet represents a landmark shift in the EUâs digital landscape after the European Digital Identity Framework came into force in May 2024.
As a secure mobile application, the wallet is designed to provide EU citizens, residents and businesses with a reliable means of digital identification.
By 2026, every Member State is required to offer at least one wallet version built to common technical specifications. The initiative aims to empower users with full control over their personal data, allowing for selective disclosure.
This feature enables individuals to share specific information – such as proving they are over 18 – without revealing unnecessary details like an exact date of birth.
Beyond identification, the wallet serves as a digital vault for digital documents, including driving licences, diplomas and travel boarding passes.
It will facilitate seamless cross-border activities such as opening bank accounts, enrolling in foreign universities and authorising payments. Large-scale pilot projects are currently testing these use cases to ensure the ecosystem is robust.
For service providers and public administrations, the wallet promises enhanced fraud prevention and streamlined authentication, fostering a more integrated and secure European digital market.
