Usage-based billing platform Metronome has agreed to join payments processing giant Stripe in a move aimed at changing how companies monetise software

Metronome, a provider of metered billing service, has signed an agreement to join payment processing platform Stripe

Under the agreement, Metronome services will become a core part of Stripe’s product suite.

Metronome CEO and Co-founder Scott Woody describes the move as a part of the company’s six year journey to improving customer experience.

In a blog post, Scott describes being “Customer Obsessed” as a core company value, even pinning it as the “north star” behind every company decision.

Aligning itself with Stripe, Scott continues: “Stripe has the same orientation, the customer is the barometer that matters”.

Both companies have aligned their values, as Scott notes that after spending time with senior leadership at Stripe, there is a strong “same future for monetisation”.

Partrick Collison, CEO of Stripe, says in a post on LinkedIn:  “We’re delighted to welcome Metronome to Stripe!

“Metered pricing is the native business model for the AI era.

“As far as we can tell, the associated shift in how businesses generate revenue will be as big as the advent of SaaS. (It may even turn out to be considerably bigger.)

“We’re looking forward to integrating Metronome’s industry-leading capabilities with the rest of the Stripe Billing platform.”

Which services are affected?

Metronome has confirmed that users will be able to access services across the full spectrum of products, from complex enterprise workflows to simple self-serve models.

The company also announced that it will continue to concentrate efforts on its largest and fastest-growing customers.

Customers can expect faster progress for capabilities such as real-time spend alerts, seat-based credits and hierarchical accounts.

In addition to faster capabilities, Metronome customers will access Stripe’s five 9’s, including global financial infrastructure.

How did Stripe acquire Metronome?

Payments processing behemoth Stripe continues to expand its product offerings and service with its recent acquisition. Growth has been powered by the company's AI-forward approach.

Stripe launched what the company describes as the world's first AI foundation model specifically designed for payments at its annual Sessions conference in May 2025.

The model marks a departure from Stripe's previous approach of using specialised AI models for individual tasks such as fraud prevention.

"Previously, we couldn't take advantage of our vast data," Emily Glassberg Sands, Head of Information at Stripe, noted.

The foundation model, trained on tens of billions of transactions, captures hundreds of signals about each payment that specialised models cannot detect.

Early implementations demonstrated effectiveness against card testing attacks, where fraudsters attempt to validate stolen card information.

The new foundation model increased detection rates for large businesses by 64% immediately upon deployment, compared to the 80% reduction Stripe achieved over two years with previous systems.

Stripe partners with OpenAI on ChatGPT integration

In October 2025, Stripe partnered with OpenAI to launch Instant Checkout, enabling ChatGPT users to purchase products directly within the chat interface.

The collaboration produced the Agentic Commerce Protocol, an open-source framework defining how AI systems can manage transactions between customers and merchants.

"Stripe is building the economic infrastructure for AI," William Gaybrick, President of Technology and Business at Stripe, said at the time.

The protocol provides a technical framework ensuring merchants retain control of payment processing and their customer relationships.

Once a user finalises a purchase, the protocol is used by ChatGPT to send order details to the merchant's backend.

From there, the merchant can accept or reject the order, handle the payment via their usual provider and arrange fulfilment using their established systems.

Through collaborations with Etsy and Shopify, the OpenAI system initially features items from Etsy before expanding to include more than one million merchants on Shopify.

Merchants are charged a fee for each finalised sale whilst the feature remains free for users with no impact on product prices.
