Being genuine and caring deeply about your work isn't a philosophy but a daily practice, says Chip Mahan, Global head of fintech at Sage, referencing a principle that has guided his career.
Sage is a global leader in providing software solutions for small and mid-sized businesses, specialising in accounting, financial management, HR, and payroll systems.
“In my role I lead a global team of subject matter experts in the area of fintech,” says Chip. “We're focused on delivering innovative financial technology solutions deeply embedded in our core accounting software for critical operations our customers have to manage.”
He adds: “It's enhancing our core accounting through a single platform, which makes life easier for our customers, breaking down barriers and enabling them to focus on how to drive business growth and deliver exceptional customer services.
Chip has taken the same approach through his rich and varied career. He was in intelligence with the US government, serving as a US diplomat overseas, after which he joined Bank of America, running its corporate and purchasing card programme for the federal government.
Later, he spent time with American Express, running a global organisation for its technology sales consultants, both for card and travel.
In his current role, Chip says the main challenges are “around pace”.
He says: “It's about how we move faster with this ever-evolving technology that's happening in fintech? How do we stay ahead of it? How do we make sure that we deliver to our customers what they're looking for timely and reliably?”
He says the second major challenge is awareness.
“It's about making sure our customers know about the fintech solutions we have that are available for them within our products.”
He finds the job immensely rewarding: “We are able to make a huge difference, and delight our customers with the solutions we provide.
“We help their businesses thrive and knock down the barriers for them, so they can focus on growth.”
