Bitcoin Lightning Payments at FinTech LIVE Singapore
Sagun Garg took the stage at FinTech LIVE Singapore 2025 to deliver an engaging keynote presentation that explored how Bitcoin and the Lightning Network are transforming digital payments.
He highlighted the growing adoption of Lightning payments, positioning them as a powerful alternative to traditional financial systems.
Opening his talk, Sagun demystifies the Lightning Network, a payment protocol layered on Bitcoin.
While Bitcoin itself has long been viewed as a slow network, constrained to seven transactions per second, Lightning changes the equation by enabling high-speed, low-cost transactions.
The implications of this are vast.
Bitcoin Lightning payments offer a compelling alternative to card networks like Visa and Mastercard, reducing transaction fees for merchants and enabling instant, peer-to-peer settlements.
The speed, efficiency and low cost of transactions make it particularly attractive in regions with limited financial infrastructure.
Transforming global payments with Lightning
Beyond its cost-effectiveness, Sagun stresses Lightning’s potential for global financial inclusion.
Countries with high inflation or limited banking services can use Bitcoin Lightning to conduct secure, decentralised transactions without reliance on banks.
He cites a key example from Africa, where companies are using Lightning to facilitate payments via mobile phones - even without internet access. “With mobile phone numbers being the user names or just like an email address, your phone number is used as an address to send money between any two people,” Sagun notes, making it possible to send and receive payments via SMS.
Sagun also positions Lightning as a disruptor for everyday transactions, comparing its potential adoption to Apple Pay or Google Pay.
Another revolutionary aspect of Lightning is its ability to power micropayments.
Sagun outlines a scenario where streaming services charge users per second of content viewed - an entirely new monetisation model.
This model could extend beyond media to online services, gaming and even AI-driven transactions where automated systems negotiate payments in real time.
The road to mainstream adoption
When asked how long it will take for Bitcoin Lightning payments to go mainstream, Sagun provides a nuanced response.
Adoption depends on geography - countries with well-established payment infrastructure may not feel the urgency to switch, but in underbanked regions, Lightning is already making a difference.
With its speed, low cost and borderless nature, Bitcoin Lightning is poised to reshape fintech.
Whether it takes months or years to reach mass adoption, its momentum is undeniable.
