David VĂ©lez, CEO of Nubank: Revolutionising Banking in LATAM
David Vélez is the co-founder and CEO of Nubank, the largest independent digital bank globally, headquartered in São Paulo, Brazil.
Since its establishment in 2013, Nubank has transformed the financial landscape in Latin America by offering accessible, transparent and user-friendly banking solutions.
David’s career journey
Before founding Nubank, David gained substantial experience in the financial sector.
He held positions in investment banking at Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs and worked in private equity at General Atlantic.
He also spent time as a partner at Sequoia Capital from 2011 to 2013, where he led the firm's Latin American investments, providing him with critical insights into the region's financial dynamics.
The inspiration for Nubank arose from David’s personal frustrations with the bureaucratic and costly banking system in Brazil.
In 2013, alongside co-founders Cristina Junqueira and Edward Wible, he launched Nubank with the mission to simplify banking and eliminate excessive fees. The company's innovative approach has attracted a vast customer base, expanding beyond Brazil into Mexico and Colombia, and serves over 90 million customers.
Industry influence
Under David’s leadership, Nubank has achieved remarkable milestones, including its public listing on the New York Stock Exchange in December 2021.
The company's success has been attributed to its customer-centric philosophy, technological innovation and commitment to financial inclusion.
David’s vision has not only disrupted traditional banking in Latin America but has also set new standards for fintech globally.
Married to Peruvian-American entrepreneur Mariel Reyes Milk, together they have joined the Giving Pledge, committing to donate the majority of their wealth to philanthropic causes.
This commitment reflects their dedication to leveraging their success for broader societal impact.
