Klarna's new collaboration with Visa will test how BNPL transactions work in person, rather than online
BNPL provider Klarna has teamed up with Visa to start a trial of a new physical debit card, designed to offer customers another option for payment methods

Klarna and Visa have unveiled an ambitious pilot programme for a revolutionary debit card that has the potential to transform how consumers approach everyday spending.

This follows on from the announcement that Visa will also be launching a physical card with Zilch, another 'buy now, pay later' provider.

The Klarna Card represents a significant departure from traditional payment methods by combining instant debit functionality with flexible pay-over-time options in a single product.

Klarna is currently conducting a carefully managed trial in the US to gather user feedback and refine the product experience.

This measured approach reflects the company's commitment to delivering a polished, user-centric financial tool before broader market deployment.

The phased rollout strategy will see expansion across the US followed by European markets later this year.

This is a pioneering example of a future where consumers will only need one card in order to have access to their preferred ways to pay, no matter where they are, or what they’re purchasing.

How Klarna is leveraging Visa's technology

The card leverages Visa's Flexible Credential technology, a sophisticated network capability that enables multiple payment experiences through one card.

This technological foundation allows users to access debit, prepaid, credit, instalment and rewards functions seamlessly.

The integration ensures compatibility with over 150 million Visa-accepting merchants worldwide, providing unprecedented global reach for flexible payment options.

Consumer appetite for the Klarna Card has been extraordinary, with over five million people already joining the waitlist. This remarkable response underscores growing demand for transparent, flexible payment solutions that put consumers in control.

The enthusiasm demonstrates a clear shift away from traditional banking products towards more innovative, tech-driven alternatives.

'The freedom to choose'

The Klarna Card extends beyond simple payment functionality to offer a complete financial management platform. Users benefit from an FDIC-insured wallet that enables real-time transfers and deposits alongside integrated budgeting tools.

The seamless integration with Klarna's existing Pay in 4 and Pay Later services creates a unified financial experience. David Sandström, Klarna's Chief Marketing Officer, emphasised the consumer-centric philosophy driving the innovation.

"We consistently hear from consumers that they want the freedom to choose how and when to pay," he explains.

The card represents Klarna's evolution from a payment provider to a comprehensive digital banking alternative for modern consumers.

Visa's vision

“Millions of people around the world have embraced the choice and control offered by Visa’s Flexible Credential, and we’re delighted to extend this to even more US consumers, as well as bringing it to Europe for the first time,” says Mathieu Altwegg, SVP Product and Solutions for Visa in Europe.

“This is a pioneering example of a future where consumers will only need one card in order to have access to their preferred ways to pay, no matter where they are, or what they’re purchasing.”

This expansion demonstrates Visa's commitment to enabling consumer choice and payment flexibility across global markets. The Klarna Card will be available in three distinctive colours: aubergine, black and bright green.

Customers will eventually have access to tiered service options, including free and premium versions with enhanced benefits. While debit functionality is available to all users, credit features require individual assessment and approval.

The future of digital banking

This launch positions Klarna as a serious contender in the global neobanking space. The company is strategically positioning itself as a modern alternative to traditional banking institutions. By combining spending, saving and borrowing tools in one platform, Klarna is addressing the comprehensive financial needs of digital-first consumers.

What's more, the Klarna Card represents a significant challenge to established banking models that separate different payment functions. The integration of flexible payment options into everyday spending tools could accelerate the adoption of buy-now-pay-later services.

This innovation may prompt traditional banks to reconsider their approach to payment flexibility and consumer choice.

The success of this pilot programme could reshape expectations around payment flexibility and financial control. As consumers increasingly demand transparency and choice in their financial products, the Klarna Card sets a new benchmark for innovation.

The collaboration between Klarna and Visa demonstrates how fintech partnerships can deliver genuinely transformative consumer experiences.
