The FCA Partners with Nvidia for AI Testing Sandbox

The UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has formed a partnership with Nvidia to provide financial services firms with access to artificial intelligence testing capabilities through a new regulatory sandbox programme.
The Supercharged Sandbox initiative will grant participating firms access to Nvidia's accelerated computing infrastructure and AI Enterprise Software, combined with regulatory guidance and technical expertise from the FCA.
The programme opens for applications immediately through the regulator's website, with successful applicants able to begin testing from October.
The collaboration forms part of the FCA's broader strategy to support economic growth through technological innovation.
The regulator has positioned the initiative as complementary to its existing AI Live Testing service, which serves firms at more advanced stages of AI implementation.
Targeting early-stage development
The Supercharged Sandbox specifically targets firms in the discovery and experimentation phases of AI development.
Companies seeking to test AI concepts but lacking the necessary infrastructure or capabilities can access Nvidia's computing platform within a regulatory framework designed to facilitate safe experimentation.
Jessica Rusu, the FCA's Chief Data, Intelligence and Information Officer, says the collaboration addresses a gap in the market for firms seeking to explore AI applications.
“This collaboration will help those that want to test AI ideas but who lack the capabilities to do so,” Jessica states. “We'll help firms harness AI to benefit our markets and consumers, while supporting economic growth.”
The programme represents an expansion of the FCA's regulatory sandbox approach, which has previously focused on providing regulatory clarity for financial technology innovations.
The addition of computing infrastructure through the Nvidia partnership marks a shift towards providing technical resources alongside regulatory guidance.
Industry transformation through AI
Nvidia's involvement reflects the technology company's broader push into financial services markets. The partnership provides the chipmaker with direct access to UK financial institutions seeking to integrate AI capabilities into their operations.
Dr Jochen Papenbrock, EMEA Head of Financial Technology at Nvidia, describes the collaboration as addressing fundamental changes occurring across the financial sector.
“AI is fundamentally reshaping the financial sector by automating processes, enhancing data analysis, and improving decision-making, which leads to greater efficiency, accuracy, and risk management across a wide range of financial activities,” Dr Jochen says.
The Nvidia executive emphasises the security aspects of the testing environment, noting that firms can explore AI innovations within a controlled framework.
Financial institutions have shown increasing interest in AI applications for areas including fraud detection, customer service automation, and risk assessment, but regulatory uncertainty has created barriers to implementation.
The FCA's approach through the Supercharged Sandbox aims to reduce these barriers by providing clear regulatory parameters for AI testing.
Firms participating in the programme will receive guidance on compliance requirements while accessing the technical infrastructure needed for AI development.
The initiative comes as UK financial regulators face pressure to support innovation while maintaining consumer protection standards.
The government has identified artificial intelligence as a key component of economic growth strategy, with financial services representing a priority sector for AI adoption.
Applications for the Supercharged Sandbox remain open to any financial services firm seeking to experiment with AI technology.
The FCA has indicated that the programme will operate alongside its existing innovation support services, creating multiple pathways for firms at different stages of AI development.
