Founded in Colorado in 2006, Techstars has grown from local accelerator to global force in startup innovation

Techstars, founded in Boulder, Colorado by David Cohen, Brad Feld, David Brown and Jared Polis, has evolved into a significant player in the startup investment landscape.

The organisation began as an accelerator and has since expanded its reach and impact through its accelerator and investment activities.

Today, the organisation's portfolio companies have achieved a cumulative market capitalisation of US$124bn, with 21 companies reaching valuations of more than US$1bn.

Inside a Techstars accelerator

Each three-month accelerator programme has one clear goal: to help entrepreneurs succeed. During these intensive periods, Techstars surrounds companies with the best mentors and an unrivalled network of corporate partners, investors and alumni.

With more than 3,700 active mentors, the programme provides funding and fundraising opportunities, workshops and curated resources, alongside countless peer learning opportunities.

The accelerator model facilitates deep peer learning and collaboration. By bringing together groups of companies for its programmes, Techstars creates opportunities for founders to share experiences and insights, potentially leading to valuable partnerships and knowledge exchange.

This model has proven effective, with companies raising an average of more than US$1m in their first raise post-programme.

The organisation's success in nurturing technology companies is demonstrated through notable exits from its portfolio. SendGrid, which went through the accelerator programme, was later acquired by Twilio.

Another successful graduate, DigitalOcean, completed its initial public offering in 2021. These exits have helped establish Techstars' track record in identifying and supporting promising technology companies.

Core values and global vision

Techstars operates on the fundamental belief that entrepreneurs can change the world.

From startup founders to corporate employees to visionary dreamers, entrepreneurs hold the keys to solving the greatest challenges of our time. They see opportunities, take risks and clear the path for entire industries.

The organisation believes that collaboration drives innovation, pointing to the history of breakthrough technology as a testament to people, teams and partners working in sync to achieve their goals and scale their ideas.

By bringing together ambitious founders and corporations, Techstars enables innovation through creative, powerful relationships.

Central to Techstars' philosophy is the belief that great ideas can come from anywhere - beyond Silicon Valley and even beyond developed countries.

This drives the company’s active cultivation of startup culture at the local level, growing communities of entrepreneurs through live events, mentorship and education to create a more sustainable and inclusive world.

Building future innovation

Techstars is actively working to ignite the global information economy, creating opportunities in neglected communities and advancing innovative teams regardless of their origin.

This mission is evidenced by initiatives like the January 2025 Startup Community Catalyst Africa in Botswana, a series of pre-accelerator and startup education programmes including Founder Catalyst, Community Development Lab and Startup Weekends.

The comprehensive support structure for early-stage companies extends beyond just capital.

Techstars offers founders access to experienced mentors who can guide crucial aspects of building a technology company, from product development to market strategy.

This approach has proven particularly valuable in sectors where founders need more than just funding to succeed.

Through supporting entrepreneurs at every stage of their journey, Techstars works to create positive social and economic change.

Its approach combines seed funding with structured support, mentorship and access to a vast network of alumni and industry connections, reflecting its commitment to making innovation accessible to anyone, anywhere in the world.
