Monzo Launches Contents Insurance Amid Renter Protection Gap
Monzo targets underinsured market with flexible policy as research reveals half of UK renters lack coverage

Digital bank Monzo has introduced Contents Insurance after research showed half of UK renters either don't have coverage or don't understand what it is.

This protection gap affects millions of tenants in the rental market, leaving them financially vulnerable when their possessions—valued at an average of £12,144 (US$15,000)—are stolen, damaged or lost.

"We've heard from customers that contents insurance is an area they find confusing and tricky to manage," says Phoebe Hugh, Head of Insurance at Monzo. "We've put a simple and flexible offering into their Monzo app, making it easy to get the cover they need and track it alongside the rest of their money."

Understanding the Protection Gap

Several misconceptions contribute to this lack of coverage. About 21% of renters believe they don't need contents insurance, while 42% either incorrectly think their landlord would cover damaged belongings or aren't sure who's responsible.

This misunderstanding creates substantial financial risk, especially considering that 58% of renters have experienced incidents that could have been covered by insurance.

Cost remains the primary barrier, with 41% of respondents citing high prices as a deterrent. Another 12% mentioned the inflexibility of annual contracts as an obstacle.

Monzo's new offering simplifies the insurance process with a five-question application that pre-fills information the bank already knows about its customers.

Users can personalise their policies with immediate visibility of how each choice affects pricing, and can modify or cancel coverage without fees.

Comprehensive Coverage

Chubb

The product, underwritten by Chubb, provides protection for belongings up to £100,000 (US$129,000) from floods, fires, storms and natural disasters. The same limit applies to theft, excluding items stored in unsecured shared areas.

The coverage extends beyond the home, protecting possessions up to £1,000 (US$1,296) when damaged or stolen while out in the British Isles, though cash is excluded.

Items affected during home moves are covered up to £10,000 (US$12,900), including during temporary storage periods of up to 72 hours.

Additional features include coverage for lost keys, spoiled food due to freezer failure and personal liability.

For extra premiums, customers can add accidental damage protection, specific coverage for high-value items over £1,000 (US$1,296), and a 24-hour home emergency service.

"We only ask what we need to know," Hugh explains. "If you need to claim, you can do it in the app at any time—we'll explain what to expect at every stage."

Strategic Growth

“As we continue building the one app customers rely on to manage all of their money, we'll be bringing many more exciting products to help people protect what matters to them”

This insurance launch is part of Monzo's broader strategy to create an integrated financial platform. With over 11 million customers, the app already offers budgeting, saving, borrowing, investing, mortgage tracking, and pension consolidation services.

The new insurance product is available to UK residents 18 and over who maintain a Monzo current account. It will roll out to all eligible customers in the coming weeks.

For Monzo, which began in 2015 as one of the UK's first digital-only banks, moving into insurance represents a natural expansion of its services. As the UK rental sector grows, so does the demand for flexible insurance products designed for renters.

"This is just the start of how we're reimagining insurance to work for our customers," Hugh says. "As we continue building the one app customers rely on to manage all of their money, we'll be bringing many more exciting products to help people protect what matters to them."
