HSBC Appoints New Chief Sustainability Officer

HSBC has recently announced the appointment of Julian Wentzel as its new Group Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO). Julian, who temporarily filled the role following a vacancy left by his predecessor, has now been formally instated. His experience and former contributions mark a significant step in HSBC's ongoing commitment to sustainability.
Julian stepped into the role of CSO after Celine Herweijer vacated the position in November 2024, concluding her three-year tenure. Expressing enthusiasm about his new position, Julian states: "I am delighted to be confirmed today as Group Chief Sustainability Officer for HSBC."
He goes on to emphasise the bank's dedication to environmental goals: "Supporting the transition to net zero is a priority for HSBC and for the customers we serve.
"In my previous roles, I've worked at the forefront of supporting our customers — some of whom face the most ambitious and challenging transitions — to finance and deliver against their sustainability ambitions and to identify innovative solutions to enable their progress.
"I am looking forward to leveraging this experience at a greater scale as we work with our customers to support them in continuing to advance their transition priorities, and to realise the benefits of a more resilient global economy for our businesses, our shareholders and the markets we operate in."
Julian Wentzel: The Veteran Banker with a Plan
Joining HSBC in 2015, Julian has spent over 25 years in the banking industry, gathering experiences across various roles and regions.
These experiences have equipped him with a robust understanding of complex global challenges and the ability to devise innovative solutions. Key to his skill set is also his excellent relationships with regulators and stakeholders.
Notably, his career has included leadership roles such as Head of Banking for HSBC Africa, Head of Global Banking UK and International Europe, and Head of Global Banking for MENAT, before he assumed the interim CSO role.
His stint as the interim CSO has been marked by significant influence, particularly focusing on HSBC’s ambitious sustainability targets and its transition strategies towards achieving net zero emissions.
"His leadership will be key in supporting our commitment to sustainability as he brings a strong client and commercial lens to this agenda," HSBC stated, underlining the crucial role he now undertakes permanently.
Julian expressed appreciation for the support from within the company in a statement: "Thank you to Georges Elhedery, Pam Kaur and the Group Operating Committee for their support and engagement so far, and to colleagues in sustainability and across the bank for their determination and commitment to our ongoing success in this critical agenda."
He further noted his anticipation of continued collaboration with clients and partners in advancing HSBC's sustainability initiatives.
Legacy and New Horizons in Sustainability
Julian takes over from Celine Herweijer, who during her tenure as CSO, pioneered significant sustainability ventures for HSBC.
A notable achievement under her leadership was the development of HSBC’s Net Zero Transition Plan. This ambitious strategy underscores the bank’s pledge to aligning its operations and financial endeavours with global climate objectives, aiming for net zero emissions by 2050.
The plan comprises commitments to mobilise between US$750bn and US$1tn in sustainable finance and investments by 2030.
It targets sector-specific emissions reductions by 2030 for industries like oil and gas, power and utilities, and more, based on their emission levels in 2019. Moreover, HSBC has embarked on a US$100m five-year Climate Solutions Partnership with the World Resources Institute (WRI) and WWF, seeking to enhance climate innovation and support renewably powered transitions in Asia.
Julian's appointment heralds a continuation and expansion of these groundbreaking initiatives as HSBC focuses on reducing its ecological footprint alongside that of its investments and clients. Through strong leadership and innovative approaches, HSBC aims to contribute to a more sustainable and resilient global economy.
