Mastercard, PayPal Partner on Unified Payment Platform

Mastercard and PayPal have announced plans to collaborate on new payment solutions using Mastercard's One Credential platform, extending a partnership that already includes the PayPal Debit Mastercard and PayPal Business Debit Mastercard products.
The collaboration will see both companies co-develop features that integrate PayPal's services with One Credential, a technology that allows consumers to access multiple payment methods through a single digital interface.
This means users can manage different payment options without switching between multiple cards or applications when making purchases online or in physical stores.
Technology responds to shifting consumer behaviour
The partnership comes as Mastercard research shows digital-native consumers, particularly Generation Z users, increasingly demand personalised payment solutions that adapt to their purchasing behaviour.
These insights influenced the development of One Credential, which Mastercard announced earlier this year with commitments from multiple financial services partners.
One Credential functions by allowing issuing banks to offer consolidated payment experiences to their customers through a single card interface.
The technology supports various payment types including debit transactions, structured credit arrangements and instalment payments, enabling users to progress between different payment methods as their financial circumstances evolve.
For PayPal users, this integration will provide access to structured credit options that can support credit-building activities as they transition from debit to credit products.
The platform maintains consistent user experiences across both digital and physical payment environments while preserving the security protocols required for different transaction types.
“We both want to reduce friction for consumers and bring them more power over how they pay”
Strategic implications for financial institutions
Financial institutions adopting the platform can configure payment hierarchies based on customer profiles and transaction histories, while the system supports real-time payment method selection and maintains compliance with regulatory requirements for different credit products.
The technology addresses growing merchant and consumer demand for simplified checkout processes. Rather than requiring separate technology implementations, participating issuers can deploy One Credential at scale across their customer bases, offering unified payment experiences through existing banking relationships.
This approach enables PayPal to reach consumers through financial institutions' One Credential implementations while maintaining its own service standards.
Users can select payment options based on purchase amounts, merchant categories or personal preferences without requiring separate authentication processes.
“We are excited for the opportunity to innovate together with Mastercard,” says Chris Sweetland, SVP of Partnerships at PayPal. “We both want to reduce friction for consumers and bring them more power over how they pay.”
Building on established foundations
The announcement builds on years of commercial collaboration between the two companies across multiple payment categories.
Both firms have worked to expand payment access while addressing the evolving needs of consumers who expect seamless experiences across different purchasing channels.
The One Credential platform represents Mastercard's broader strategy to offer network-level capabilities that can be implemented globally.
By consolidating various payment methods under a single interface, the technology aims to support consumers' financial progression from basic banking services to more sophisticated credit products.
Financial institutions using the platform can offer expanded payment options while maintaining separation between different payment methods behind a unified interface.
This structure allows banks to support customer growth through their financial journeys while managing risk appropriately for each product type.
“We're excited to empower consumers with more choice and control over how they pay, together with PayPal, building on our collective strength of global payments innovation,” says Bunita Sawhney, Chief Consumer Product Officer at Mastercard.
“With One Credential, we're delivering the personalised digital experiences that build consumer confidence and trust.”
