Lloyds Accelerates AI Strategy with Google Cloud Platform
Lloyds Banking Group deploys Vertex AI to transform data capabilities amid wider tech overhaul

Lloyds Banking Group has migrated its machine learning and artificial intelligence systems to Google Cloud's Vertex AI platform, positioning the UK's largest retail bank to expand its data science capabilities across customer services.

The partnership, announced at Google Cloud Next in Las Vegas, represents a significant shift for Lloyds as part of its strategic transformation to cloud-based technologies.

The group has transferred 15 modelling systems comprising hundreds of individual models from on-premise infrastructure to Google's cloud environment.

“Moving to Vertex AI has been transformative for us as a Group, providing us with the scalability and reliability to innovate with AI at pace,” says Ranil Boteju, Group Chief Data and Analytics Officer at Lloyds Banking Group.

The migration has enabled the bank to deploy over 80 new machine learning use cases and 18 generative AI systems into production.

These systems span across Lloyds' business units, which include retail and commercial banking operations through brands such as Lloyds, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland.

Technical implementation and emissions reduction

Lloyds reports that the migration has resulted in a reduction of 27 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions from its operational footprint, addressing sustainability targets alongside technical objectives.

The banking group has developed an algorithm to reduce income verification in mortgage applications from days to seconds, demonstrating practical applications for customers seeking home loans.

Vertex AI, Google's machine learning platform that provides tools for building and deploying AI models, has been implemented across Lloyds with consistent security controls.

The platform allows data scientists and AI developers to access generative AI solutions while maintaining flexibility to use large language models from third parties and open-source providers, as well as Google's Gemini model.

“With Google Cloud's Vertex AI platform, Lloyds Banking Group can deploy powerful machine learning models faster, so that it can action transaction insights more quickly,” says Tara Brady from Google Cloud.

Agentic AI and future developments

The bank is currently developing an agentic AI system – autonomous AI that can perform tasks with minimal human supervision – in collaboration with Google Cloud.

The prototype system could transform how customers interact with banking services and is expected to launch later this year.

Lloyds plans to release 12 additional generative AI systems by the end of June, further expanding its use of the technology across its business operations.

The move comes as Google Cloud continues to compete with Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services in the enterprise AI infrastructure market.

Google Cloud

At Google Cloud Next, the company unveiled its seventh-generation Tensor Processing Unit named Ironwood, which provides 42.5 exaflops of compute per pod with over 9,000 chips – more than ten times the performance of its previous generation.

Google has also launched an Agent Development Kit and Agent2Agent protocol for inter-agent communication, potentially enabling banks like Lloyds to develop more sophisticated AI systems that can work together across functions.

For financial institutions operating under strict regulatory requirements, Google has formed a partnership with Nvidia to run its models in on-premises environments, with Dell as a hardware partner.

This enables deployment in regulated environments, addressing adoption barriers in financial services where data sovereignty and security remain paramount concerns.

“Nvidia and Google Distributed Cloud provide a secure AI platform, bringing Gemini models to enterprise data centres and regulated industries,” explains Justin Boitano, VP of Enterprise AI Software at Nvidia

“With Nvidia Blackwell infrastructure and confidential computing, Google Distributed Cloud enhances privacy and security, and delivers industry-leading performance on DGX B200 and HGX B200 systems, available from Dell.”

Lloyds Banking Group serves approximately 27 million customers across the UK and supports nearly one million UK businesses through its digital and relationship banking services.

The bank's AI transformation aligns with its stated purpose of “Helping Britain Prosper”, aiming to improve financial decision-making for customers through data-driven insights.

“Vertex AI is enabling data scientists and AI developers across the Group to access GenAI solutions with consistent guardrails, as well as giving them the flexibility to use Large Language Models from third parties and open-source providers, as well as Google's Gemini model,” concludes Ranil.
