Checkout.com Unveils Fae Verification to Bolster Digital ID
Checkout.com introduces biometric technology that allows businesses to verify user identity through video analysis and facial matching

Checkout.com, which processes digital payments for merchants worldwide, has introduced facial authentication technology as part of its identity verification (IDV) suite.

The technology enables businesses to verify returning users through live video analysis and facial matching in seconds, reducing friction in user journeys such as password recovery and secure access verification.

Enhanced security through AI technology

The newly launched feature employs artificial intelligence to match facial features against previously stored onboarding data while detecting potential fraudulent attempts such as deepfakes - manipulated videos that can impersonate real individuals - or physical masks.

This authentication method can be implemented at any stage of the user journey and operates without requiring passwords, one-time passcodes (temporary codes sent to users' devices for verification), or manual review processes.

Milan Jani, VP of Product at Checkout.com

Milan Jani, VP of Product at Checkout.com, explains the technology's foundation: “Checkout.com's biometric solution sets a new benchmark in identity verification, combining greater speed and security with a firm commitment to ethical standards.

“Built to meet FIDO Alliance certification requirements, the product is already achieving consistent algorithm performance, confidently offering businesses and users alike inclusive and secure experiences.”

FIDO (Fast Identity Online) Alliance is an industry association that develops authentication standards as alternatives to password-based security.

Cross-industry applications

The verification system supports various industries including government departments, healthcare providers, financial services, electronic signature platforms, food delivery applications, loyalty programmes and airlines.

DocuSign, which provides electronic signature services, and Uber Eats, the food delivery platform, have already implemented Checkout.com's IDV solution to enhance security while maintaining an efficient user experience.

European banking-as-a-service provider Swan has reported substantial improvements after adopting the technology.

Benjamin Grall, Senior Product Manager, Swan

Benjamin Grall, Senior Product Manager at Swan, says: “With face authentication from Checkout.com, we've transformed our passcode reset process, cutting it down from three days to just minutes while strengthening security.

“Even better, this change has doubled user conversion rates for this flow. The impact goes beyond user experience, improving operational efficiency and streamlining workflows.”

Business impact and conversion improvements

The facial authentication technology is accessible through a unified verification API (application programming interface), which allows developers to integrate the functionality into their systems through standardised code.

Checkout.com reports that clients implementing the technology have seen up to an eight percentage point increase in returning-user conversion rates - the proportion of users who complete a desired action after returning to a platform.

The launch represents an expansion of Checkout.com's fraud management and risk assessment tools, which aim to build trust in digital transactions.

Milan emphasises the focus on user experience: “Our goal was to build a solution that keeps users safe without slowing them down.

“Face authentication is designed for those points in the user journey, like account recovery or re-onboarding, where friction often creeps in. By letting trusted users verify their identity in seconds, we help businesses deliver a smoother, simpler experience that builds trust without compromising on security.”
